Russia was previously referred to as Union of soviet Socialist Republics with the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Once a world power, that rivaled with U.S, USSR disintegrated in 1991. 11 new countries that emerged after the fall of USSR formed the Commonwealth of Independent States.
CIS include the Slavic countries (Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus, Moldova), the Southern Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan), and Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan).
